SANAA Serpentine Pavillion

render perspective.png

This Pavillion was designed by Japanese design company SANAA, commissioned to Architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. The initial concept of this Pavillion was to create a space that is continuous in the meanwhile seamlessly connects with the surrounding environment. The structure has aluminum roofing supporting by a serial of polished stainless steel columns, reflectiveness of these metal materials makes the Pavillion reflect and connects with the environment and make it blend into the woods.

Roof contour & Circulation

The pavilion can be accessed from any direction, but the movement of users are predictable, they tend to move toward the furniture and the lowest point of the space, which is the southwest corner of the space. According to research, the wind comes from southwest most of the time, the low end of the roof and the transparent screen helps create a windbreak for users.

solar analysis & thresholds

Sun diagram was made to predict the movement of the users. According to research, the average temperature in Britain vary from 18 to 10 Celsius from July to October, the sun is favorable for users for climate comfort. The diagram shows that the area where the furniture located can receive direct sunlight most of the time. Thus that furniture plays the role of attractor, which can be also called the threshold.

Final pin up

When modeling the model, the intention of the structural design can be understood. For example, before the task, the reason why the southwest end corner was so low that only children can easily access is unclear. After modeling and researching, the purpose of making that is to create a windbreak for users who use the space. Because there are no conventional thresholds like doors or porch, the identification of the threshold is different from the traditional structure. Through research and modeling, the furniture and the transparent screens were identified as thresholds since their ability to gather people and create a meeting point. Through this project, the idea of circulation and threshold were studied and used in analyzing a new architecture. The idea of "in-between space" is beneficial and it needs to be considered in later design.
